Ah, Samantha Irby. An essayist who manages to write about nothing but make it everything. I read her other collection of essays We Are Never Meeting in Real Life, but this one was so much more humorous and I wasn't even sure that was possible! I'm trying to think about how to summarize this book and it just doesn't seem possible. I mean, 90% of it is about diarrhea, not showering, and masturbation, yet it is a masterpiece!
As depressing as her essays could be, it makes me feel less alone. Irby discusses her anxiety and depression in funny ways that allows for us all to make a joke of our own. You haven't gotten out of bed today? That's okay, neither has this successful author. You only shower to put on pajamas? So does a bestselling author! I mean, I just can't describe how this book made me feel less sad about my own life.
Aside from the humor, Irby discusses many real-life issues, mainly focusing on growing up in poverty and being parentless. She makes even these grim circumstances humorous. Detailing her life in a series of essays is one of the best things Irby could have done for those of us who are struggling with issues health wise, family wise, or economic wise. It was just a really great read!
