For 18 years, Rose Gold Watts believes herself to be chronically ill and on death's doorstep. Turns out, her mother, Patty Watts, is simply an exceptional liar. After serving years in prison, Patty is released, asking her estranged daughter to take her in. The entire community is stunned when Rose says yes... she must have a lot of forgiveness in her... or not.
Darling Rose Gold is very clearly a play on the Gypsy Rose case, but with a very different ending. Honestly, I think if this book was a little more creative and enticing, it would have seen a jump in sales with Gypsy's release earlier this year. Unfortunately, this book came out during COVID, and aside from the fabulous cover out, it didn't make much of a bang.
Honestly, as a true crime fanatic, I hoped to love this book, but it was just... meh. I didn't find the characters loveable, the ending wasn't even memorable (I had to look at reviews to refresh my memory), and the overall pacing was slower than I had hoped. Despite these complaints, however, it was still an interesting read. I would recommend it if this was a particular trope someone was interested in, but there are many other standard thrillers I'd recommend before this one.
