5/5 Snowflakes

Darby Thorne is a college student who decides last minute to go back home to visit her ailing mother. Unfortunately, this last minute decision means Darby must drive from Colorado to Utah in a dreadful winter storm. About halfway through the storm, Darby realizes that the Rocky Mountains are no joke when it's snowing. After no choice, Darby stops at a gas station to wait out the storm. At the gas station, she finds a group of strangers who have the same thoughts.
About halfway through the night, Darby goes outside for some air. While out there, she sees what looks like a hand inside one of the vans. After closer inspection, Darby realizes the hand belongs to a small girl - a girl who is trapped in a cage! Panicked, Darby heads back into the gas station thinking about what she can do. She can't tell anyone because she doesn't know who the van belongs to. Who is the girl? Who owns the van? Who is actually a stranger? Darby has a limited time to find out.
This is the first book I ever received from Book of the Month, and it had me addicted to the service! I devoured the book in one day - my fitbit was constantly reminding to breathe and rest to get my heart rate down. Taylor Adams mastered the art of suspense! The twists and turns continued to the very end, yet the adventure didn't overshadow the character development. Darby was so realistically likable - truly a college student who, yes, has faults, but also has the best intentions. Telling the story through her point of view was brilliant because the reader was receiving the surprises alongside Darby. I cannot recommend this book enough!
