I have always thought that I'm the most awkward person alive... until I read Never Have I Ever. The story follows Katie's real-life troubles with dating... or her lack of it. On this Awkward Moments Day, I can't think of a better book to spotlight.
I read this book when I was 17. I had never been kissed or been on a date. The only "boyfriends" I had were the awkward hand hold and then break up through someone else type. I felt like a pariah, honestly. Everyone else I knew was losing their virginity and it was beginning to stress me out. It didn't help that I had some asshole friends who constantly pointed out my lack of a love life.
Anyway, I stumbled upon Katie's book, and it made me feel so heard and understand. It made me realize that everyone moves at their own pace, and while we all have awkward moments, no one actually sees it as bad as you do. I commend Katie for being able to write about such embarrassing moments. Without her, I probably would have felt like a loser for way longer than I did. Instead, any time something horrible happened in my love life - I wrote about it! I thought maybe other people would enjoy reading it, and it was rather therapeutic for me, as well.
My biggest advice to anyone is to laugh at yourself! We all have awkward moments, and there's really no sense losing sleep over them.
