Girl Haven is a graphic novel that details the journey, Lilah Sturges journey particularly, of gender identity. Born a male, Ash is confused about his gender. He joins a pride ally group at school and finds doors opening for him. When he invites his new friends home, they discover stories his mom, whom left, has written. While reading the stories, Ash and the group of girls are transported to a magical world. It's great until Ash realizes the world is only available for girls. What does that mean for him? Will Ash find his true identity?
This was a cute story. Very well-done and the creativity and drawings are wonderful! However, it wasn't my favorite story. I think Lilah did an excellent job, don't get me wrong, it just wasn't my cup of tea fantasy-wise. I found the writing to be a little elementary, and I had to constantly remind myself of the intended age group. To me, I also felt like the stories painted boys in a bad light. I understand the intention, but I thought that component was a little divisive. However, I can also understand and appreciate that component of the book and its necessity.
While I wasn't the biggest fan, I do think I'd buy this book for a library! It's beautifully done and I think younger students will love the fantastical elements that I didn't enjoy as much. I think it's a great story for those who are questioning or still on the path of gender identity. Lilah also makes a point to say that this is her story, so it may not be relatable for every reader. I think this is a good point to make, and I hope that that lesson is retained by all readers. Overall, I think this book has the ability to not only entice reluctant readers, but those who feel misunderstood or forgotten.
