4/5 Magazines

Reasons: "challenged, banned, restricted, and hidden to avoid controversy; for LGBTQIA+ content and a transgender character; because schools and libraries should not 'put books in a child’s hand that require discussion'; for sexual references; and for conflicting with a religious viewpoint and 'traditional family structure'" as per the OIF

In celebration of Banned Books Week, I have decided to read George which has topped the Top 10 List all 4 years of its publication. The book follows fourth grader George, who feels as though she's a girl trapped in a boy's body. George hides her secret from all those around her, which leads to much angst, pent-up emotions, and trauma.

When the school begins to put on a Charlotte's Web play, George knows her dream role is Charlotte. Unfortunately, everyone keeps telling her that role is for girls only. George feels like she's crawling out of her skin and no one is there for her. On top of that, the school bully - Jeff - makes George's life extra miserable. Luckily, George's best friend Kelly is there when she needs her most.

Gino writes a compelling story full of emotion, acceptance, and vocabulary. The reader becomes immersed in George's story, and roots for a positive outcome. This book is for those who have felt they don't belong and need a push to discover who they are.

I actually did like this book. It was a quick read and easy enough to help younger readers understand the terminology and situation. However, I could see how this book is banned in elementary schools. Most elementary schoolers don't understand the concept of sex and gender, so I'm sure the book would bring about a few uncomfortable situations. On the other hand, this book could also promote conversations regarding acceptance and equality. This is one of those books where parents need to make the decision themselves. I still don't think it's appropriate to remove from libraries, nevertheless.
