Are you really celebrating Banned Books Week if you don't read Captain Underpants? Pilkey's series is perhaps one of the most popular when it comes to book banning (falling closely behind Harry Potter). It actually tickles me to think of how many people get upset over a book about a principal turned underpants hero. Sure, the grammar and spelling isn't the best, and yes, the main characters are a little defiant, but think about how many kids enjoy reading Captain Underpants! In fact, this is one of the books that got me into reading when I was younger. Not to mention,. Pilkey himself is certainly someone students should look up to.
I don't like the idea that we should base intelligence off chosen literature. Literature is meant to provide an escape, and some people need pure mind-numbing books to reach that bliss (this is why I watch The Real Housewives). We should not judge what people do in their spare time so long as it's not hurting or affecting others.
I love hearing my students giggle at their seats when reading this books. I love hearing the rapid flipping of pages to make the comic move. I love the way one of my students yells "Tra la la la la" each time he's doing something at recess. We should promote this innocence and joy, not ban it. For that reason, I think Captain Underpants is going to stay on the shelves for a long while.
