4/5 Summers
Reasons: "banned and challenged for profanity, sexual references, and certain illustrations" as per the OIF.

I read this book for Children's Literature, and yes, I was surprised it was a Children's book; however, I do not believe it should be banned. The book follows Rose, who goes to a lake house every summer. Her best friend, Windy, lives there full-time. Rose's parents constantly fight all summer, so she and Windy seek solace elsewhere. Unfortunately, not being at home leads to other potential problems: like the local teenagers. Rose and Windy find themselves dealing with adult issues, some that are even life or death.
I definitely would not have this book in an elementary school, but I think a lot of middle schoolers would be able to relate and also enjoy the illustrations. I'm sure this book is banned often because it prompts discussions, but these discussions are important! It's been a year since I read this book, so I don't remember much, but I do remember crying. I remember feeling thankful to have had the childhood I did. I remember it gave me a new outlook on my students. These are reasons why it's so important that difficult literature and themes be available for all people to read!
